Police Say Davis Crashed Into a Driveway Gate
By JOHN BRANCH
The all-terrain vehicle accident that knocked the snowboarder Danny Davis out of his likely place on the United States Olympics team occurred at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. According to a report from the Summit County, Utah, sheriff’s department, Davis was on a four-wheel vehicle that slammed into a closed gate at the end of a driveway. The report said that Davis was thrown from the vehicle and later found unconscious by friends, with injuries to his legs. Other news media reports said that Davis was not alone, but it was not clear who was driving.
The report said that the sheriff’s department had investigated the accident and had no plans to file charges.
Davis, a 21-year-old from Highland, Mich., had surgery on Monday to repair a fracture in the L3 vertebra of his lower back. He is expected to fully recover but will miss the rest of the snowboard season.
The accident came hours after Davis won a Winter Dew Tour halfpipe event at Snowbasin ski resort. On Jan. 6, Davis won the United States Snowboarding Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain Resort in California, one of five Olympic qualifying events. He dedicated his victory to Kevin Pearce, a good friend who sustained a severe brain injury while training in Park City on Dec. 31.
